1. Vinegar can be but it won't brighten grungy carpets. You can also use Krud Kutter which is non-chemical, biodegradable, fume free and odorless. You can dilute it or use it straight depending on how dirty your carpets are and you can find the gallon size on the cleaning aisle at Lowes.
