How can I control algae in my PLANTED fishtank? I have a 12 gal Eclipse system tank, planted with a ton of live java ferns. I have it decorated with wood and natural colored gravel mixed with laterite. For fish, I have one honey gourami, 4 glow-lite tetras and 3 ottos. The ottos seem to be keeping the plant leaves clean, but not the glass. I have the flourescent lighting on in the tank for about 8hrs a day, and I have a lot of black hair algae and green algae on the glass. Thanks! Ottos are algae eaters. I don't want a plecostamus because they will eat my live plants. The scraping ideas are good- but I was thinking of a less labor intensive way, if anyone has any ideas :-)

Glass Top Cooking Range - I hate cleanup? My older one I sold with my old house I never had any problems keeping it clean so its not that I am not familiar with this type. This new one has a white glass top and I use the razor and the ceramabrite but there is something wrong with what I am doing. No one wants to spend this much scrubbing and scrapping as I am doing. Any other better techniques. I hate the white and was worried about this. I am so careful but still it gets dark marks after boiling water in a perfectly clean small pot. Glass cookware too. This stove has the hookup already, just in case you need it. (we used it with natural gas) My question: Is it "plug and play" or do I still need to buy parts to make it propane??

How do you clean your oven the natural way? This was a new oven. It has been used since february. I wiped the front glass several times attempting to remove the grease. The inside is a bit greasy too from food splattering while cooking. There is no self clean function (that would make my life so easy!). Last week I stepped on glass, what should I do? Last Sunday, a week from this day I stepped on a piece of glass that was hidden in my rug. I found the glass and disposed of it, my foot was bleeding a lot, I cleaned it applied pressure to cease the bleeding. Bandaged it up. During cleaning I did not see any glass. As the week has worn on I let the cut breathe in the beginning to start natural healing, kept off my feet as much as I could, and kept it covered when out. It had still been sore should I touch it or not wear slippers, to day I took to it and upon gentle puncture pus came out. I dug around with sterilized tweezers and could not find any glass... What should I do? Should I wait it out some more, go to the doctors.... ? When I cut my foot it was a step on step off and it was a blue glass from a bowl I had broken that had somehow traveled from my kitch to my living room. I dont know I never thought the glass may have broke off or anything and only the soreness was what made me paranoid, i'm wondering if that could just be from the pus?

Gas Fireplace Question? I have a gas fireplace installed in my rec room. It was installed by the previous owners before we bought the house a little over three years ago and from some of the markings it looks like it's been installed about 10 years. We don't use it all that often and when we do it works great but other then vacuuming any dust out of it at the start of the season I've not had to do anything to it. I notice though that there is a white "soot pattern" on the inside of the glass at the outside edges. It cleans off easy enough when I use a non abrasive glass cleaner but I'm wondering what may be causing it. Is the gas not burning clean enough? Am I not turning the fire place on hot enough to burn the natural gas completely? Is it just dust from normal air flow during the off season? Any ideas? Thanks

They're natural, and much more price friendly. I have an entire line consisting of: multi-purpose cleaner window/glass cleaner wood polish laundry pre-treating spray laundry softener and powdered laundry detergent The laundry products come in different scents. I'm also expanding into creating sachets for the dryer so you won't need dryer sheets. So back to the original question... What would be a good and catchy name for my products? I'd like to have one brand name and then it'll have the type of product underneath that, like you'd see in the stores. I need it to be different then what's out there now.

best filter and light for tank? what would be the best filter for a 29 gallon tank.we have a aqua tank 30-60 in there now,but i would like to switch it over to something that does a better job filtering the water..also what wattage light would be best. i am not sure of what sort of light is in there now.we only have 5 community fish and one kora dora in there at the moment. but within 2 days of cleaning the tank we have algae along the glass and gravel again.( we clean once a week with siphon and glass magnet and and half water change) the fish tank isnt near a natural light source and only get about 12 hours of light.

How to start being eco friendly? I would like to know how I can jump start being more eco friendly as a family. I am already known by friends and family as a "treehugger" because I make an effort to be environmentally friendly. What I do so far is this- I use cloth grocery bags. I recycle all plastic glass and metals.(we use cardboard and paper as firestarters in our firepit). I have a compost bin in our yard so I don't fill bags with compostable stuff. We closely watch our heating and cooling settings. We use biodegradable cat litter. I use eco friendly cleaning products. I walk everywhere in town I can walk. Im 7 months pregnant, trying to figure out more ways to be eco friendly, how to have an eco friendly baby- I will be using reuseable diapers (www.gdiapers.com), making my own baby food, nursing not formula feeding, using natural baby products. I am looking for more ideas on little things to do around the house to reuse, recycle, and be even more eco minded. Tips appreciated! On a small budget!

Pet-friendly carpet cleaners? Ok, so my boyfriend and I just got an apartment and he ended up accidentally knocking a glass of Hi-C on the floor by the bed. He used an "all natural" cleaner to soak it up and we had to be else-where for most of the day. Anyway, we got home and noticed her going in there and sniffing around where we cleaned the carpet. We're not sure if maybe she has licked the carpet or not, but it was still just a little damp with this cleaner. Although it is "all natural", it still says, "harmful if ingested". She is acting perfectly fine, no problems with her going to the bathroom and all seems well, but I was wondering if anyone knew an actual carpet cleaner or solution that is pet-friendly. I'm not finding much online, but it would be great if someone could help us out so that this doesn't happen again. Thanks again ahead of time for any answers that anyone may have.

Can My Granite Counter-top be fixed? I've been living in my place now for about 5 months. Shortly after moving in I noticed "faded" spots on my Dark Black Granite counter-top. They wouldn't wipe up with any of the "recommended" cleaning proceedures supplied to us from the construction company. One thing I noticed about the spots was that they did not occur from "natural" causes. It looks as if they were cause by some kind of a glass or bowl. As the faded spot is a circular area. Shortly afterwards, more of the same spots started to appear in the form of splashes around the under-mount sink. At which point I called the construction company the built my home and they had the Granite company come out to do a treatment to it. They applied some kind of a paste to it about 1/8 of an inch thick over the defective areas. Then, 3 days later came back to remove the treatment. Only to find the areas unchanged. Afterwards, they're opinion on how to fix was only to replace. I understand that granite is porous and picks up stains easily. But aside from replacing it, has anyone seen this or fixed something similar?

Green spots on the inside of my freshwater tank.? This is algae right? It is on the inside of the glass. My tank is 2.5gallons, contains a single fish, some snails and moss which has turned brown.. Am I doing something wrong or just a natural fish-killer? I recently got my first little tank. Came home with a striped angelfish and put it in the tank. The next day it (and the snail i'd bought) were dead. When I phoned the pet shop, they told me about cycling my tank and 'clean tank syndrome'. I let the filter run for 6 days, and then went back to get a guppy today to test the water. I put the guppy in, and he gets blown around the tank by the filter - he's so small, it smacks him against the glass. So I phoned the pet shop, and they said i must turn the filter off and come back tomorrow. But I don't think he'll last that long. He's been hanging around the bottom of the tank with his nose in the gravel. This is really starting to depress me... i seem to be killing everything! What am I doing wrong?!
